In the November/December issue of USA Gymnastics magazine (page 38) we showed you photos of two young gymnasts who are currently on our senior men's and women's national team.

We asked you to guess who these young rising stars are? Here are the clues again:

  • She started gymnastics in 1996 at age 9.
  • She's from Winchester, Massachusetts
  • She's a very powerful gymnast and her best events are vault and floor. In fact, she's the 2005 National Champion on Vault and Floor and the 2004 World Cup Champion on Vault.
  • She was named 2005 Sportsperson of the Year.
  • Who is she?

Gymnastics Community Contributes $500,000 to Children’s Miracle Network, p. 22
The gymnastics community across the country celebrated the seventh annual National Gymnastics Day, August 6, and the fifth year of partnership with the Children's Miracle Network. Gymnastics clubs have raised $500,000 for local children's hospitals in the past five years.

FEATURES:

VISA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Visa Championships event was held in Indianapolis, Ind., August 10-13. The competition included: men's, women's, rhythmic, and acrobastic gymnastics. The event was held in conjunction with the USA Gymnastics Congress and Trade Show.

  • Senior Men, p. 10 | Junior Men, p. 14
    Todd Thornton won this year's senior men's national all-around title, followed by David Sender and David Durante. In the junior competition, Kyson Bunthuwong won the 16-18 year old all-around title and Tim Gentry won the 14-15 year old title.
  • Senior Women, p. 16 | Junior Women, p. 20
    Nastia Liukin earned her first senior national all-around title in the senior division followed by Chellsie Memmel and Jana Bieger. In the junior division, Natasha Kelley won the all-around title followed by Bianca Flohr and Shayla Worley.
  • Rhythmic, P. 22
    Olga Karmansky captured the rhythmic all-around title in the senior division followed by Lisa Wang and Aline Bakchajian. In the junior division, Rachel Marmer won the all-around title.
  • Acrobatic Gymnastics, p. 24
    The Visa Championships served as the second of two selection competitions for the Acrobatic Gymnastics National Team. Congratulations to all the champions and National Team Members!

Trampoline and Tumbling J.O and National Championships , p. 26
Houston, Texas, was the site of the 2005 Trampoline and Tumbling Championships, held July 27-30. Almost 1,500 athletes, representing 180 clubs, competed at this year's JO National Championships. Plus elite competition took place the same weekend, naming national champions in trampoline, tumbling, double mini and synchronized trampoline.

Acrobatics Gymnastics National Championships, p. 36
The largest-ever Acrobatic Gymnastics National Championships took place July 22-28 in Louisville, Ky. More than 600 athletes participated in acrobatic gymnastics competition at Levels 5 through elite. The event concluded with the naming of the first-ever Junior Olympic National Team.

Alicia Sacramone Vaults to Victory, p. 10
Alicia Sacramone is one of the top gymnasts in the world! She's won four gold medals in three World Cup events in 2005. Most recently she won gold medals on her best events, vault and floor, at the World Cup in Belgium. We spoke with Alicia about her life as a gymnast. Read what she has to say!

This year marked the 31st Anniversary of the Junior Olympic National Championships. Houston, Texas, once again was a great host for this successful events. This year's JO Nationals marked the largest number of participants at JO Nationals with 862 athletes!

JO Women's National Championships, p. 18
The Level 10 JO National championships for women was hosted by Glider Gymnastics Charity, in cooperation with Charter Oak Gymnastics and Precision Gymnastics, May 14-15, 2005 in Ontatio, California. Congratulations to Region 5 who won the overall team champion for the third consecutive year!

Madison Torok - Against the Odds, p. 22
In this amazing story, Madison Torok shows how her determination, a wonder gymnastics club and some caring coaches can truly make a difference. Madison was born with a birth defect and her parents were told she would never run. This little girl defied odds and took fifth on floor at the Michigan State Meet!

Level 9 East/West Championships, p. 25
The Women's J.O. Level 9 Eastern Championships was hosted by the Tampa Bay Turners at the Manatee Convention Center in Palmetto, Fla., May 5-8. The Level 9 Western Championships was hosted the same weekend by Gymnastics & GymFriends Booster Club at the Washington University Field House in St. Louis, Missouri. Congratulations to all the athletes and coaches who competed in the Level 9 Eastern/Western Championships and to the hosts of the outstanding competitions!

Kristen Maloney - Heart of a Champion, p. 42
Two-time National Champion and Olympian Kristen Maloney, 24, recently graduated from UCLA with a degree with psychology, a long list of gymnastics accomplishments, and many great memories. Read what Kristen is up to now and her plans for the future!

 Paul Hamm Wins Prestigious James E. Sullivan Award, p. 18
Olympic gold medalist Paul Hamm won the AAU James E. Sullivan Memorial Award, April 13, in a ceremony at the New York Athletic Club. This is only the second time in history that a gymnast has won the coveted award.

 Nastia Liukin's Leap From Junior to Senior, p. 20
Nastia Liukin has made the leap from junior champion to senior champion with grace and precision! Nastia now has her sites set on the 2005 World Championships.

 Oklahoma Wins Third Title in Four Years - Men's NCAA Championships, p. 24
The Men's NCAA Gymnastics Championships took place on the campus of the United States Military Academy, April 7-9. Oklahoma took the title, its third in four years. The Ohio State and the University of Illinois took second and third, respectively.

 Georgia Wins Sixth National Title - Women's NCAA Championships, p. 26
Auburn University played host to the 2005 NCAA National Championships. April 21-23. Georgia came out of top, winning its sixth National Title. Alabama and Utah were a close second and third in the team rankings.

American Cup, p. 10
This year's American Cup competition was a little unique in that is was also named an FIG World Cup event, the first for the USA. This individual event only competition, was held in Long Island, NY, Feb. 25-26. The U.S. gymnasts won 10 medals, including four gold.

Winter Cup, p. 16
David Durante dominated the all-around competition at the Winter Cup Challenge, held Feb. 4-5 in Las Vegas. Plus, six different gymnasts were named as event champions, showing the incredible depth of the U.S. men's program. The event also was used to name nine gymnasts to the Senior National Team and six to participate in the American Cup competition.

Rhythmic Challenge, p. 28
Olga Karmansky became the new leading lady in rhythmic gymnastics at the senior level by winning the all-around title at the 2005 Rhythmic Challenge, held in Colorado Springs, Feb. 13. In the junior division, Julie Zetlin grabbed the title from two-time junior national champion Rachel Marmer.

Talent Opportunity Program, p. 11
The TOPs program, which stands for Talent Opportunity Program, is now in its 13th year and going strong. The program developed by USA Gymnastics in 1992 as a way of finding talented young gymnasts in order to identify them early and provide education to the gymnast and her coach. The program is definitely working with so many former TOPs gymnasts makeng the National Team.

Feature Stars & National Coaches Workshop for Men, p. 16
The 2004 Future Stars Championships was held at the United States Olympic Training Center November 19. The Feature Stars Championships features the best 10, 11 and 12 year olds in the United States performing special Feature Stars competitive routines.

Eat well. Believe it or not, that's what most active people need to learn to do. Eat for performance. Eat for health. I am surrounded by athletes who do not know how to eat well.

Trampoline & Tumbling: JumpStart, p. 25
The 3rd Annual National JumpStart Testing was held December 2-3 at the Palaestra in Dallas, Texas. Fifty-three athletes participated in the event and the JumpStart National Team has been named.

Rhythmic Future Stars, p. 26
The 2004 Future Star and Elite Future Star camps took place at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, NY, the weekends of Oct. 24-27 and Oct. 26-29, respectively. The camp was positive and productive and everyone left with a smile on their face and determination to train hard.

Memmel and Sacramone Win Gold at World Cup Finals, p. 34
TChellsie Memmel and Alicia Sacramone were the U.S.'s dynamic duo at the 12th Artistic World Cup Finals in Birmingham, England, Dec. 11-12, winning the gold medals in both bars and vault, respectively.
