Once the chalk dust had settled and the medals were distributed at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, it was time for the celebration to begin with the T.J. Maxx Tour of Gymnastics Champions. The tour will visit 42 cities in all and will showcase the phenomenal gymnasts from the 2004 Olympic Games.

National Gymnastics Day 2004, p. 30
National Gymnastics Day brings together millions of young gymnasts to celebrate the sport and promote physical fitness. Many gymnasts across the country celebrated the sixth annual National Gymnastics Day on August 7, just a week before the kick off of the Olympic Games. For the second year in a row Gymnastics World of Broadview Heights, Ohio, raised the most among the clubs. In addition, Gymnastics World's Meghen Sweeney was the single largest fundraiser.

2004 Olympic Games

The 2004 Olympic Games was phenomenal for USA Gymnastics - earning nine medals, the highest medal count in a non-boycotted Olympics in the modern history of gymnastics. Team USA won two team silvers, the first time both teams have medaled since 1984. In addition, Carly Patterson and Paul Hamm won the all-around gold medals plus Annia Hatch earned a silver on vault, Patterson won the silver on beam, Humphrey grabbed the silver on bars, Paul Hann won silver on high bar and Courtney Kupets took the bronze on bars. It was an incredible Olympic Games for USA Gymnastics.
2004 Sports Acrobatics National Championships, p. 40
National Championships for Sports Acrobatics took place in Palm Springs, Calif., July 23-31. More than 570 athletes representing 43 clubs competed in Levels 5 through Elite. With the increased participation, the 2004 championships were the largest Sports Acrobatics National Championships to date. Read the story and results on page 40.
Trampoline and Tumbling JO Nationall Championships, p. 44
Over 1600 athletes, representing 180 clubs competed at the Trampoline & Tumbling J.O. National Championships in Tampa, Florida, July 13-19. The annual event names National Champions in individual trampoline, power tumbling and double mini trampoline for Levels 5-10 and in synchoronized trampoline for Level 10 only. The athletes range in age from 6 & Under to 17 & Over. Check out the results in this issue!

Sports Acrobatics World Championships, p. 8
Arthur Davis and Shenea Booth performed an amazing combined exercise, full of difficulty, unique choreography and enthusiasm to earn their second World Championships title at the 2004 Sports Acrobatics World Championships held in Lievin, France, May 21-23.
JO National Championships Women, p. 10
The Level 10 JO National Championships for women was hosted by Orlando Metro and its booster club Elite Gymnastics Organization, Inc. in Kissimmee, Fla., May 1-2. Congratulations to Region 5 who won as the overall team champion for the second consecutive year.
JO National Championships Men, p. 13
This year marked the 30th Anniversary of JO Nationals for men, May 5-9, with San Diego, Calif., once again being a great location. 2004 also marked an all-time high number of participants-711.
JO National Championships Rhythmic, p. 16
The Rhythmic JO National Championships were held in San Rafael, Calif., April 23-25. Level 7, Level 8, Group and Team awards were given at the competition.
U.S. Olympic Team Trials, p. 18
Olympic Trials for gymnastics took place in two cities on two consecutive weekends. The Trails for Rhythmic and Trampoline took place in San Jose, Calif., June 19 while the trails for men's and women's artistic took place in Anaheim, Calif., June 24-27. Congratulations to those athletes who were selected based on their performance at the Olympic Trials - Jennifer Parilla, Trampoline; Mary Sanders, Rhythmic; Paul Hamm, Brett McClure, Jason Gatson and Morgan Hamm, Men's Gymnastics; and Courtney Kupets and Courtney McCool for Women's Gymnastics. The remaining men and women will be selected at the Olympic Team Selection Camp in July.
Visa U.S. Gymnastics Championships presented by Gillette Venus Divine, p. 24
This year's Championships took place in Nashville, Tenn., for men's women's, rhythmic and trampoline and tumbling, June 2-5. On the women's side Carly Patterson and Courtney Kupets tied for the fold, while World Champion Paul Hamm grabbed the title on the men's side. In rhythmic competition Mary Sanders earned her third title while Jennifer Parilla grabbed her fifth title in trampoline. Read all the results and information from Championships in this issue.
Level 9 East/West Championships, p. 40
The Women's Level 9 Eastern Championships took place April 24-25 at Virginia Wsleyan College in Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Va. and was hosted by Ocean Tumblers Gymnastics School. The Level 9 Western Championships took place April 24-25, 2004 at the Seahawks Exhibition Center in Seattle, Wash. and was hosted by Auburn Gymnastics Center.

USA Athletes Shine in Athens at Olympic Test Event, p. 10 A U.S. delegation of men, women, rhythmic and trampoline athletes and coaches traveled to Athens for the Olympic Test Event. Courtney McCool earned the all-around gold medal plus two individual event medals as well. Samantha Sheenhan won silver on bars and Alexander Artemev took bronze medals in both parallel bars and high bar.
Women's NCAA Championships p. 12 UCLA won its fifth title at the Women's NCAA Championships held on the Bruins's home turf. Jeana Rice of Alabama won the all-around title while Elise Ray grabbed the bars title, Ashley Kelly was the top finisher on beam and Ashley Miles won vault and ties for the top honors on floor with Courtney Bumpers.
Men's NCAA Championships p. 14 Penn State grabs the win at the Men's NCAA Championships, held at the University of Illinois' Assembly Hall. Penn State's Luis Vargas won the all-around title and teammate Kevin Tan earned top honors on still rings. California's Graham Ackerman earned two event titles on floor and vault, while pommel horse went to Illinois' Bob Rogers, parallel bars was awarded to William and Mary's Ramon Jackson and high bar honors went to Illinois' Justin Springs.
Pacific Alliance Championships, p. 16 Team USA won 44 medals at the Pacific Alliance Championships in the beautiful site of Honolulu, Hawaii. The event included both junior and senior competition for men, women, and rhythmic gymnastics.
Courtney McCool is HOT in Greece, p. 26 Courtney McCool not only finished second at the 2004 Visa American Cup but also won the all-around title at the Olympic Test Event in Greece. National Team Coordinator Martha Karolyi said, "The event in Greece was a big competition with Russians, Romanians and Chinese gymnasts and Courtney came out on top. She's a very high level international athlete."

Visa American Cup, p. 10 The prestigious Visa American Cup competition kicked off the Olympic Year in New York City's Madison Square Garden, site of the very first Visa American Cup in 1976. Jason Gatson won his first and Carly Patterson won her second consecutive Visa American Cup title.
Winter Cup Challenge, p. 17 The 2004 Winter Cup Challenge was held in Las Vegas, Feb. 6-7, and showcased much talent and depth within the men's program. Veteran of the Men's Senior National Team, Blaine Wilson, 29, won the competition with Sean Townsend finishing second.

Sanders Sweeps Rhythmic Challenge, p. 32 The U.S. Rhythmic Challenge kicked off the Olympic year for rhythmic gymnastics, Feb. 1, in Colorado Springs, Colo. Rhythmic sensation Mary Sanders dominated the competition, showing four brand new and upgraded routines. Thirteen-year-old Julie Zetlin won the junior division.

Tops, p. 12 The National TOPs Camp was comprised of three days of educational opportunities for both the athlete and her coach on basics, sports science and general development of these talented young athletes, Dec. 6-10, at the USA Gymnastics National Team Training Center. A second camp was held Dec. 10-14 for the next 80 gymnasts in rank order. The TOPs program has shown dramatic success over the last 12 years and continues to be a big part of the success of the USA women's program.
Men's Future Stars Championships, p. 17 The Men's Future Stars Championships were held November 14 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. The Future Stars event, held in conjunction with the National Coaches Workshop, determined the Men's National Development Team. The top 19 in the 10 Year Old Division, top 19 in the 11 Year Old Division and the top 14 in the 12 Year Old Division from this year's Future Stars Championships were named to the 2003-2004 National Development team.
Hollie Vise's Vision, p. 22 Hollie Vise began gymnastics when she was 3 and has had a vision ever since. Although she just turned 16 on Dec. 6 she was already compiled a large list of accomplishments in the sports. For starters, Hollie and her U.S. teammate Chellsie Memmel accomplished an amazing feat by trying for the gold medal on bars at the 2003 World Championships. We talked to Hollie about her gold medal win and her future goals in the sport and beyond.
