Enthusiastic fans!

Go USA!

by Kathy Scanlan
President, USA Gymnastics

As you read this issue of USA Gymnastics you are probably engrossed in the coverage of the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. NBC has told us that 57% of its coverage will be of gymnastics-making it the most watched sport in the summer Olympics.

As I write this article, I don't know how we will be faring at the Olympics. (Due to our publication dates I'm writing this article before the start of the Games.) But, I do know that everything is being done by our athletes, coaches and administrators to make it possible for our team to do its very best in the race for the medals at the Olympic Games. No stone has been left unturned in an effort to make all Americans proud of our effort!

During this period millions and millions of Americans will watch our sport. I believe that they will see a sport which is graceful and dynamic, and which teaches important life skills such as focus, determination, goal setting and sportsmanship. They will also see phenomenal athletes who are the best in the world!

It is this cycle of excellence we hope to continue. It is important that we do everything we can to encourage young people to sign up for gymnastics classes. Because, whether or not those classes lead all the way to making an Olympic Team, kids are better off for having participated in gymnastics. They will be better off as athletes in other sports; better off for the discipline they learn through gymnastics; and better off for having participated in some way in the Olympic spirit and dream.

We hope you enjoy watching the Olympic Games on television and, for the rest of the year, may you be motivated to be the best gymnast, coach, judge, or parent of a gymnast you can be.

This article is reprinted from the July/August 1996 USA Gymnastics magazine.
