Don Peters - National Team Coach (Absent) C
assie Rice - National Team Coach
Valerie Luiken - National Team CoachThis Conference Call was conducted to discuss the number of credentials that are available, confirmed or a possibility. Kelly explained the "facts" which exist for the Olympic Games. There are a limited number of credentials available for the Games and it is not possible to get a non-credentialed coach into the system of assistance from the Olympic Committee.
Hill asked for discussion regarding the memo which stated that only one coach per club would travel with the team. Hill facilitated the conference call and the group discussed the departure from the past system of allowing a second coach per athlete to attend the competition at their own expense. While the majority of the coaches on the call did not express the need for a second coach for a single athlete, some coaches still requested they have the ability to take the second coach at their expense. Karolyi strongly believes that each athlete on the team be entitled to a personal coach (this will ensure that her training can continue to be intense and efficient), but did not agree with having non-credentialed coaches attending. Kelly expressed that all decisions must be made for what is best for the whole effort. If the second coach cannot be treated equally (apparel, credential, transportation, housing, etc) they become frustrated and cannot fully support as normal.
Although there are no concrete answers yet available from the Olympic Committee regarding number of credentials, flights, tickets, apparel, etc, we do know that credentials are limited (not our allotment in 1996), that non-credentialed coaches will received no apparel, flights, combined card for processing, etc. It was also mentioned that the Olympic Games and the Pan American Games, unlike World Championships and other international competitions, are not our event nor under our jurisdiction.
Karolyi believes that the "AS" credentials should be distributed first to the Head and Assistant Coaches, the NGB Administrator and then the remaining credentials one per club. If there are any additional credentials they would be distributed by a system to be determined. Further discussion will be held regarding the Olympic Games distribution system at the next training camp. Kathy will obtain some guidelines from the Olympic Committee and a policy will be developed and distributed to the coaches. Concerning the Pacific Alliance, Kelly stated that we have 12 credentials remaining and 12 flights. (6 athletes and six coaches). Hunter suggested that we use the same system for the Pacific Alliance until we have time for further discussions. It was agreed that if a credential can be obtained (if needed and requested) for a second coach for a member of the team, all cost associated with the travel will be the responsibility of the personal coach.
