George Beckstead FIG Rep. (absent)

II. MPC Minutes

Discussion began dealing with the problem of getting the minutes out to the men's gymnastics community in a timely fashion. It was agreed that within a 48-hour period the minutes would be sent from the Sec. to the Pres. for his review. He would send copies to the other committee members and to the Men's Program Director. After two days of review, comments and corrections would be sent to the Sec. and a final copy would be sent to the Men's Program Director for the USA Gymnastics President to sign, to be placed on the web page and for distribution.

III. Reports

A. Senior Pacific Alliance Meet-The team finished 3rd, one place from the USOC's marker. USA Gymnastics could lose five percent of USOC Centralized Funding if two of our five markers are missed. The three team goals were missed as well and two members of the team were disciplined and removed from the team after breaking curfew.

B. Goodwill Games-Thornton earned silver on FX, Tomita earned bronze on PH, LaMorte won the gold on SR and Wilson won the bronze in the AA. Peter Kormann said the team met two out of three of the team goals. Ron Galimore said the U.S. judges performed poorly as it relates to the context of international judging.

C. Junior Pan Am Games-The team won the gold medal and did an excellent job. They took top three in the AA and the coaches, athletes and judges worked well together.

IV. FIG Congress, Portugal

Ron Galimore reported on changes to the FIG structure.

V. Selection of 1999 World Championships Coach/Assistant Coach

The Men's Program Director is asking for coaches to submit their resume to him to apply for these positions.

VI. Selection Procedures for the 1999 World Championships Team

Discussion centered on the fact that the FIG has changed the rules of team meets. No longer is every athlete required to compete in the all-around. The new rules of the FIG international competitions warrant a close look at how we select our teams. Waller stated he was not comfortable with selecting a team using subjective criteria. Williams pointed out that most international teams use only one or two all-around gymnasts so we should not be locked into picking just all-around gymnasts for our team. What is best for the U.S. team score?

Organize a working group for the objective selection of our teams based on data and scores at previous selection meets. The committee would consist of Mark Williams, Jarrod Hanks, Chris Waller and Dennis McIntyre.

Motion-Mark Williams
Second-Tim Daggett

VII. Strategic Planning Meeting for National Team Coaches

There will be a meeting of the Senior National Team coaches at the end of October or the beginning of November.

VIII. Men's Program Scholarships

The MPC is responsible for giving money to six individuals for academic assistance. The Men's Program Director is accepting applications now.

IX. Men's Program Budget Update

Men's Program Director reviewed the budget. It is anticipated that we will be able to restore some items that were cut.

X. Fall/Winter Camps and Competitions

The Junior camp in October will be restored since funds are available. There will be a Senior camp in December.

XI. New Business

1999 Winter Cup-The Winter Cup Challenge was awarded to Dusty Ritter's club in Las Vegas. Galimore stated that there would be prize money for the meet and that he is working on getting TV coverage in the future. USA Gymnastics is presently negotiating with Texaco to sponsor the event in the future.
