Notes from FIG Flash No. 14

Official News
The members of the FIG Executive Committee met in Rome, February 13-14, under the presidency of Bruno Grandi (ITA). At the close of the meetings, the following principal decisions were taken:
- The World Championships of Sports Aerobics 1998 were awarded to the Italian Federation (Rome), and those of 1999 to the German Federation (Hanover). The exact dates still have to be confirmed.
- FIG Symposiums: At the time of the 1997 RSG World Championships in Berlin, the FIG will organize three Symposiums devoted to the following themes:
October 20-21: Development of Junior Talent in Artistic and Rhythmic Gymnastics
October 22-24: Development of Men's Artistic Gymnastics
October 25-26: Structures and Schedule of FIG Competitions- The Nepalese Federation (NEP) has been provisionally readmitted.
- Judges panels: Authorities ratified the modifications proposed by the Competitions Commission for a new organization of judges panels and their allocations. In the future, all FIG disciplines must adopt the same structures as their juries. Marks A (starting mark) and B (performance) must be scored simultaneously. Warnings and replacements may be carried out during competitions. Judges work will be evaluated after competitions based on video images. Propositions supporting the decrease of judges and the standardization of juries A and B are still being assessed.
- The updating of the Apparatus Brochure was confirmed. Furthermore, in light of the General Assembly's decision to include 20 cm landing mats in Women's competitions, a height adjustment of respective apparatus (beam and uneven bars) will be necessary. The Federations will be informed of the new dimensions.
- In 1999, the Artistic World Championships of Tianjin (CHN) as well as the RSG in Osaka (JPN) will be qualifying for gymnasts desiring to attend the Olympic Games 2000 in Sydney.
- Decision by the IOC on March 6th, 1997: the Trampoline will not become the fourth FIG Olympic discipline in Sydney 2000.
- A work group has been formed to define the conditions for merging the FIG and the Trampoline Federation (FIT) as well as for Sports Acrobatics (IFSA).

Pacific Alliance
In November 1996, 13 member federations participated in the General Assembly of the Pacific Alliance in Kuantan (MAS). At this time Jim Barry was re-elected to the Presidency. The next Alliance championships will take place for Juniors in 1997 in Houston. The Seniors will meet in 1998 in Winnipeg (CAN) July 10-12 and in the year 2000 probably at Christchurch (NZL). Henceforth, RSG will rightfully be part of the PANGF disciplines.11th World Gymnaestrada
The Swedish organizers of the 11th World Gymnaestrada have just published their first information Bulletin. Welcome, program, location layout, cultural activities, etc. - nothing is missing! In the chapter regarding novelties, we are impressed by the organization of a youth mega-camp. The opportunity will be offered to 500 adolescents, from all parts of the World to get better acquainted with Sweden and the Swedish people, to train together, to fraternize with other gymnasts from other countries, and to encourage a better understanding between the world's people. This is a new and superb initiative of the Organizing Committee, which allows young gymnasts to create strong and lasting ties, founded on the development of physical and moral values which bring to mind and defend the Statutes of the FIG.World Championships in Lausanne
On March 1, 58 national federations had returned their provisional registration forms for the World Championships in Lausanne to the FIG Secretariat. To date, the following are registered: 42 men's teams; 32 women's teams; 31 individual male gymnasts; and 49 individual female gymnasts.This article appears in the May issue of Technique magazine, Vol. 17, No. 5.
