Alvarez tops all-around at U.S. Men's Qualifier

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., June 9, 2007 – Guillermo Alvarez of Denver/Team Chevron finished at the top of the all-around rankings at the 2007 U.S. Men’s Qualifier at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The two-day meet was the means for male gymnasts to qualify to compete in the 2007 Visa Championships, scheduled for Aug. 15-18 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.
Scores from both days of competition will count toward team selection for the Pan Am Games and World University Games, which will be named by the Men’s Selection Committee. The teams will be announced in the near future.
To qualify for the Visa Championships, the sport’s national championships scheduled for Aug. 15-18 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., gymnasts finished in the top three in the individual events or in the top 24 in the points system ranking after the second day. These 24 senior gymnasts join other athletes who have already qualified for the Visa Championships prior to this event. Also, 36 juniors advanced to the Visa Championships from the Men’s Qualifier and will make up the entire junior field for the Visa Championships. All are listed below.

In the all-around, Alvarez edged out Jonathan Horton of Houston, Texas/University of Oklahoma, 178.100 to 178.050. David Durante of Garwood, N.J./Team Chevron, was third at 174.900
The gymnasts who finished at the top for each of the six events are: floor exercise, Alvarez and Horton, tied at 30.400; pommel horse, Alvarez, 30.150; still rings, Kevin Tan of Fremont, Calif./Team Chevron, 31.550; vault, Sean Golden of Camden, N.J./Gattaca, 32.350; parallel bars, Justin Spring of Burke, Va./Team Chevron, 31.250; and horizontal bar, Joseph Hagerty of Rio Rancho, N.M./Team Chevron, 30.550
