Beck suffered a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee and will be unable to compete on the balance beam at the Goodwill Games, as previously announced. The injury has prompted several changes in the Team USA lineup for the individual event finals next week in New York.
Originally scheduled to compete in floor exercise, Kristen Maloney (Pen Argyl, Pa.), will replace Beck on beam. Maloney placed first on beam at the International Team Championships in Knoxville in March and at the American Classic in Orlando, Fla., in February. Current national champion Vanessa Atler (Canyon Country, Pa.) will compete in floor exercise as well as in vault.
In another lineup change, the United States also has gained a second entry in the uneven bars final. Joining Elise Ray (Columbia, Md.) will be two-time Olympian Dominique Dawes (Silver Spring, Md.), who also will take part in the mixed pairs competition. The bronze medalist in floor exercise at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, Dawes was a part of the "Magnificent 7" that won the women's team gold medal in Atlanta. She also was part of the bronze medal team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. Ray and Dawes train together at Hill's Gymnastics in Rockville, Md.
