
Nation's Top Male Gymnasts to Gather in Houston for Winter Cup Challenge

Contact: Craig Bohnert, USA Gymnastics, (317) 237-5050, ext. 247INDIANAPOLIS - A prize purse of more than $13,000 and the opportunity to compete in two major international events will be on the line when 74 of the nation's top male gymnasts gather for the Winter Cup Challenge, to be held Feb. 13-14 at the Texas Sports Ranch in Crosby, Texas.
Highlighting the field will be three members of the 1996 Olympic Team, including two-time defending national champion and 1997 AAU Sullivan Award finalist Blaine Wilson (Columbus, Ohio). Joining him will be '96 teammate Chainey Umphrey (Albuquerque, N.M.) and two-time Olympian John Roethlisberger (Minneapolis, Minn.).
Also on hand will be 1997 World Championships Team member Jay Thornton (Augusta, Ga.) and U.S. National Team members Aaron Cotter (Lincoln, Neb.), Garry Denk (Northbrook, Ill.), David Kruse (Lompoc, Calif.) and Trent Wells (Keizer, Ore.).
Cash prizes will be awarded to the top six all-around finishers, with $3,000 going to the all-around champion. Individual event medalists also will receive prize money, with $500 going to the winner of each of the six events. The competition will consist of two sessions for the individual event finals on Friday, Feb. 13. The top 36 all-around scores from Friday advance to the all-around finals on Saturday evening.
The competition also will determine the two athletes who will join Wilson and Roethlisberger as the USA representatives in the Visa American Cup, to be held in Fort Worth, Texas, March 5-8. It also will round out the USA roster for the International Team Championships, a team competition against China and Romania slated for March 27-28 in Knoxville, Tenn.
