USA Gymnastics President's Message

Robert Colarossi Bob Colarossi
May, 2001

With more than 120 sessions to choose from, this year's National Congress offers something for every coach, club owner, judge and administrator. Continuing with the theme of "Excellence through Education," we've planned an informative line-up of seminars focusing on everything from technique and safety to the best ways to market your gymnastics business. I'd especially like to encourage your attendance at the Club Owners Business Conference in which you will receive invaluable advice on how to run a successful gymnastics club. This seminar was sold out in 2000, so please register early this year. Furthermore, the Exhibit Hall will once again have the latest in gymnastics products and services at discounted prices.

The 2001 Hall of Fame celebration will take place at the U.S. Championships in Philadelphia. Congratulations to the Class of 2001: Ed Burch, Phil Cahoy, Lance Ringnald, Andrea Schmid, Sue Soffe, Ann Carr Tunney and Kim Zmeskal, along with Frank Endo and Jerry Wright who will receive the Lifetime Achievement Awards.

National Gymnastics Day is set for August 25. Together we can make this year the best yet for increasing the visibility of our sport! I am excited to inform you of our plan to create a nationwide Cartwheel-A-Thon. USA Gymnastics will partner with a national charity and the proceeds raised will be divided between the charity, the USA National Team and your club. Be on the lookout for more information about the Cartwheel-A-Thon in the near future.

The newly formed FIG Council met for the first time April 11-12 at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland. Members of the council were elected in November of 2000 at the 73rd FIG Congress in Marrakesh. The members discussed numerous issues concerning both the Codes of Points and the Technical Regulations for all FIG competitions, including the World Championships and Olympic Games. Following are the highlights of the decisions made:

In an effort to better service your needs, I am pleased to tell you that we have ordered a new and improved telephone system to be installed May 21. If all representatives are busy when you call Member Services, you will be placed in a que so that your needs can be serviced at the time of your call. Also, Internet speed will be increased four times which will greatly decrease the amount of time it takes for you to register online and search for data.
