July 26: China, Russia Take Mixed Pairs Medals
Storming back from fifth place after last night's competition, the Chinese duo of Ling Jie and Huang Xu took the gold medal in mixed pairs as gymnastics competition at the 1998 Goodwill Games came to a close in Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Sunday afternoon.
July 25: USA Teams Falter in Mixed Pairs
The Ukraine's tandem of Olga Teslenko and Roman Zozulya held the lead at the halfway mark of artistic gymnastics mixed pairs competition at the 1998 Goodwill Games Saturday evening at Nassau Coliseum, with three Russian duos and both Chinese tandems among the eight teams advancing to Sunday's finals. Meanwhile, three pairs from the United States struggled, and the Americans will not participate in the final two rounds.
July 24: Russia's Kabayeva Takes Home Rhythmic Gold Mine
Russia's Alina Kabayeva, gold medalist in Thursday night's rhythmic gymnastics all-around competition, continued her dominance at the 1998 Goodwill Games, winning three of four individual events on Friday evening at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
July 23: Huang, Ivankov, Kabayeva Emerge as Goodwill Games Victors
Ivan Ivankov of Belarus won his second gold and fourth medal of the 1998 Goodwill Games with his victory in high bar, China claimed its first gold medal of the Games and Russia's Alina Kabayeva took the all-around gold in rhythmic gymnastics in competition held at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Thursday evening.
July 22: Three Gold to USA in Gymnastics Event Finals
Vanessa Atler (Canyon Country, Calif.) earned her second gold medal of the Goodwill Games as United States athletes took three of the four golds available in gymnastics competition Wednesday evening at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Joining Atler on the top step of the awards stand were Chris LaMorte (Long Island, N.Y.), who won the still rings in front of a hometown crowd, and Kristen Maloney (Pen Argyl, Pa.), who won the balance beam.
July 21: Atler's Vault Gold Leads USA Medal Parade in Goodwill Games Events
Current national champion Vanessa Atler (Canyon Country, Calif.) grabbed the gold medal in women's vault as the United States earned four medals in gymnastics individual event competition at the 1998 Goodwill Games Sunday evening at Nassau Coliseum.
July 20: Wilson Takes Bronze as Ivankov Claims Goodwill Games Gold
Battling a strong field and a sore shoulder, Blaine Wilson (Columbus, Ohio) held on despite bobbles in his last two events to claim the bronze medal in men's all-around at the 1998 Goodwill Games Monday evening at Nassau Coliseum. The gold medal went to reigning world champion Ivan Ivankov of Belarus.
July 19: Moceanu Claims Goodwill Games Gold
Dominique Moceanu (Houston, Texas) became the first non-Russian woman to win a Goodwill Games all-around gold medal as gymnastics competition opened at the 1998 Goodwill Games Sunday evening at Nassau Coliseum. "I've always dreamed of this moment," said Moceanu, who wiped away tears as the Star Spangled Banner played in her honor. "I was always hoping this would happen someday. I'm coming back after a really rough time. After what I've been through, this means so much more."
July 18: Injury Forces Beck to Withdraw from Goodwill Games; Dawes Added to USA Women's Lineup for Uneven Bars
Kendall Beck (San Antonio, Texas) has been forced to withdraw from the United States lineup for the 1998 Goodwill Games due to a knee injury suffered during preparations at her home gym, Cypress Academy of Houston.
Jun 28: Wilson, Nemov, Ivankov Headline Star-Studded Field in Men's Gymnastics at 1998 Goodwill Games
Headed by the likes of 1996 Olympians Blaine Wilson and Aleksei Nemov and 1997 World Champion Ivan Ivankov, the roster of athletes who will compete in men's gymnastics at the 1998 Goodwill Games reads like a Who's Who in the sport.
May 27: Dawes, Moceanu, Khorkina Headline Olympic and World Champion Women Competing at the 1998 Goodwill Games
Two members of the "Magnificent 7", Olympic Gold Medalists Dominique Dawes and Dominique Moceanu, and the reigning World Champion, Svetlana Khorkina, headline the field of elite women competing at this year's most dynamic and competitive international gymnastics competition-the 1998 Goodwill Games.
