Senior WomenAugust 14, 16 -- Vanessa Atler, Gliders, and Kristy Powell, Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy, tied for the gold at the 1997 John Hancock U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Denver, Colo. The last time this happened was 1972 (Joan Moore, Cathy Rigby). The U.S. World Championships team was also selected at this competition; the members are: Powell, Mohini Bhardwaj, Kristin Maloney, Jennie Thompson, Kendall Beck, and Dominique Moceanu. Atler, Jamie Dantzscher, and Lindsay Wing are all not age-eligible to compete at the World Championships, and thus do not qualify for the team despite their top six rankings. Senior MenAugust 13, 15 -- Blaine Wilson successfully defended his National Championship title today in Denver, Colo., at the 1997 John Hancock U.S. Gymnastics Championships. He is the second man in this decade to win both the NCAA Championships and the USA Championships in consecutive years; the first man to do this was John Roethlisberger, in 1992-1993. The top six athletes comprise the U.S. World Championships team; in addition to Wilson, these gymnasts are Roethlisberger, Jason Gatson, John Macready, Mike Dutka, and Jay Thornton. Junior WomenAugust 14, 16 -- Marline Stephens, Cypress, won the junior women's title today at the 1997 John Hancock U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Denver, Colo. Second was Cincinnati gymnast Sierra Sapunar, and third was Cypress gymnast Kristin Thome. Junior MenAugust 15 -- Sean Townsend, GymMasters, won the junior men's all-around title for the 16-18 age group, while Raj Bhavsar, Cypress, claimed the same title for the 14-15 age group at the 1997 John Hancock U.S. Gymnastics Championships. Both junior champions train in Houston, Texas.
