Notes

For the first time in Olympic or World Championship history, the USA women's team won the gold medal. The USA entered the team finals in second place, trailing Russia by .127. A near-perfect effort on bars swung the team into first place, which they held through the remaining three rotations to become the new Olympic champions. Second went to Russia, who won the men's team title the night before. Third place went to the current world champions, the Romanian team, who competed with only six gymnasts because of an injury to Anamaria Bican the previous week in training.

Kerri Strug was the last competitor for the USA team, and punctuated the victory with one of the most heroic moments thus far in the history of American gymnastics. Strug fell on the landing of her first vault, a Yurchenko with one and a half twists, injuring her left ankle. The USA already had one low vault score, thus putting the pressure on Strug to hit her second vault. In a dramatic finish, Strug vaulted a clean Yurchenko with one and a half twists, landing with both feet but immediately lifting her left leg in pain. Balancing on her right foot, she turned to salute the judges, and then fell to the floor until the coaches were able to reach her and carry her off the podium. Following the awarding of the medals, for which she was carried onto and off the stage by her coach, Bela Karolyi, Strug was taken to a Crawford Long Hospital for x-rays. According to U.S. team medical staff, the x-rays were negative; Strug suffered a third-degree lateral ankle sprain.

The top three women for the USA who advance to all-around finals are Shannon Miller (78.028, 2nd), Dominique Dawes (77.786, 6th), and Kerri Strug (77.735, 7th). Other preliminary all-around results include Dominique Moceanu (77.523, 11th) and Jaycie Phelps (76.772, 17th). If Kerri Strug is unable to compete, then Moceanu is next in line for an all-around slot. Strug, Dawes, and Moceanu have each qualified for two events finals, while Amy Chow and Miller have each qualified for one. If Strug is not able to compete in her two event finals, then she will be replaced by Miller on vault and Dawes on floor.

First place in the preliminary all-around was Lilia Podkopayeva of Ukraine with 78.061.

Congratulations to our fine women's gymnastics team!
