Notes

The USA women glided through their compulsory routines, beating world champion Romania but falling second to Russia, who leads all teams after the first day of competition. Shannon Miller, who finished second in Barcelona at the Olympics in 1992, currently sits in second, behind world champion Lilia Podkopayeva from Ukraine. The USA women, along with Russia, Romania, and Ukraine, will compete in the medal round on Tuesday night.

Mo Huilan of China, a favorite for individual medals, missed her uneven bars routine, requiring an extra swing.

A mere .127 separates Russia and the USA. The compulsories count for 50%, and the optional competition on Tuesday will count for the other 50%.
