Lilia Podkopayeva (Ukraine), the current World and European champion, added the most prestigious title in gymnastics to her resume, winning the women's all-around championship at the Olympics with a score of 39.255, solidly defeating her closest competition. She thrilled the crowd with her balletic style and her floor mount, a double flip foward with a half twist on the second flip. Three Romanians also took the awards stand, with Gina Gogean grabbing the silver, and Simona Amanar and Lavinia Milosovici tying for the bronze. Milosovici was also the bronze medalist in 1992.
Like the American men, the women's team placed two athletes among the top ten: Shannon Miller (8th), and Dominique Moceanu (9th), who replaced an injured Kerri Strug. Dominique Dawes placed 17th (tie). All three Americans stepped out of bounds on floor exercise and committed errors elsewhere. Miller had a low landing with a big step on her double layout mount on floor; Moceanu was unsteady on her punch front on beam; and Dawes was unable to complete her middle floor pass ending with a two and a half twist, punch front. Dawes and Miller were in first and second (tie) until their errors.
As one observer stated, "Tonight is disappointing, but they can't let it spoil the fact that they made history two nights ago. They have everything to be proud of."
